Music Before I Could Speak

I'm not sure when I composed my first song but I was young. Really young.

Mom says I was singing before I could speak. There is music in my head all the time. Some of it originated by others. Some of it from within me. But for more than 50 years it has been there.

I learned to play the guitar as a teenager in order to accompany myself. Put the words and the tunes down on paper together.

Had I not gone into a W2 job that I was good at (and enjoyed) I might have pursued it more aggressively. As it was I was happy to perform it for audiences on the local scene.

Then I got married. I wrote less music but the poetry/lyrics were still there. Age is taking my hands...or just a lot of keyboard time. I'm not really sure. So the guitars are dusty on my walls and the keyboard is still holding music I last played a year ago.

For about 11 years running I've done a creativity challenge -- 30 days of creating -- and 90 percent of it is poetry. Lyrics. Because the pen still inks for me and scratches my thoughts onto paper.

I'm exploring the singer/songwriter in me now together with the modern tools that allow me to put melody and image and vocals (albeit not me currently) together. It is still my creativity, my study, my thoughts -- but a new and emerging form of creation. New instruments.

So this site has the first album I'm composing using that collaboration. The style is very much mine. The first piece is Eshet Chayil, inspired by the powerful women of the bible and created in honor of a group of women who seek Wisdom in community.
